As the Urban Forestry Lead, you are responsible for planning and coordinating the Urban Forestry portfolio which manages all city-wide tree assets on public lands. As the Leader, you contribute your management skills and expertise to lead a portfolio of dedicated experts in identifying short and long-term strategic priorities, city-wide initiatives and oversight of operating and capital budget requirements that support and manage Calgary’s, Urban Forest.
Primary duties include:
  • Responsible for creating and executing Urban Forestry plans through leadership of your management team.
  • Oversight and accountability for multi-million dollar operating and capital budgets related to Urban Forestry.
  • Direct life-cycle projects such as the removal and replacement programs for all trees on public land while collaborating with other City Parks portfolios.
  • Oversee the technical and professional development of the Urban Forestry staff including all safety and equipment training.
  • Develop and maintain tree-related standards for construction in regional and neighborhood parks. Implement innovative technologies such as soil cells, tree management information systems, tree pest control, tree canopy analytics and other arboriculture techniques.
  • Develop and manage contracts including request for proposal (RFPs), bid selection, supervision and payment of Urban Forestry related contractors.
  • Represent Calgary Parks by responding to inquiries from citizens, media requests and members of City Council.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Forestry or Science with a major in Horticulture, Forestry or similar area.
  • A minimum of 8 years of directly related experience that includes 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • A professional designation with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) will be considered an asset.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate leadership, negotiation skills, strategic planning, financial management and communication skills combined with strong political acumen.
