Description: 

The Sawmill Supervisor in Northern California is responsible for the safety, quality and productivity of the department. This position manages the daily activities of mill employees to achieve the company’s goals and objectives. This position is also responsible for assisting sales and the General Manger to ensure that the facility meets expectations for production scheduling, inventory control, operating rate and facility financial performance. The Superintendent leads by proactively resolving employee issues, building team work and ensuring adherence to all applicable company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.

  • Provide effective, positive leadership to motivate a team of hourly production employees.
  • Provide leadership, knowledge, and direction to the operations in sawmill departments to ensure production and operational targets are met.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and well organized department.
  • Ability to multi-task while dealing with multiple, competing priorities
  • Directly supervise department employees in accordance with Company policies and applicable laws.
  • Coach employees for attainment of Company and individual goals and objectives in accordance with Company guidelines and performance management system.
  • Works closely with Quality Control persons, provide support, leadership and technical knowledge to maintain quality as well as volume and grade recoveries.
  • Coordinates with the Human Resource Department to facilitate the recruiting, interviewing, hiring and termination of employees as well as consulting with Human Resources on such issues as EEO goals and objectives and labor law issues.
  • Manages the timekeeping procedure to assure all employees are recording time accurately.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate the manufacturing fencing in compliance with company goals and objectives
  • Ability to analyze safety, maintenance, quality and productivity issues and take corrective measures.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of lumber/logs within the departments
  • Ensure regulatory compliance for the departments including operating within environmental permits, OSHA guidelines, insurance requirements and company policy.
  • Participates and provides leadership in problem solving and corrective action processes.
  • Promptly and accurately completes all recordkeeping assignments.
  • Provides effective safety leadership for the sawmill departments that includes weekly tailgate meetings; conducts all annual safety compliance training for all production employees.  Leads by example and personal conduct in all safety areas.  Conducts and/or participates in all safety investigations in regard to safety violations and takes effective actions to improve safety performance.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 7 years’ experience working in a manufacturing facility, preferably a sawmill environment
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is preferred
  • 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or key leadership role working in a sawmill or related environment is preferred
  • Must have working knowledge of sawmill optimization packages – primary breakdown and trimmer scanning
  • Strong understanding of head rig breakdown systems
  • To perform this position successfully, an individual should have a proficient skill level in Outlook, Microsoft products, and familiar with timing keeping systems and computerized maintenance management systems
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills
