POSITION PURPOSE

The Logging Supervisor serves at the direction of the Logging Superintendent and is responsible for assisting with the supervision of yarding, loading and hauling of felled timber assigned to company logging operations and to ensure that planned production is achieved safely and economically.  This is a full-time position which works out of the Northwest Timberlands Division located in Shelton, WA and reports directly to the Logging Superintendent.  The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the daily activities 25+ log hauling contractors, and 15 - 17 hourly union employees.  The Logging Supervisor will either directly perform or directly oversee timber harvest on approximately 330,000 acres with an annual harvest of 90-115 million board feet  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Assures a safe workplace.  Takes personal initiative and responsibility to insure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the company safety program with a goal of no recordable accidents.  Develops, implements, and facilitates safety elements to support the company safety program.
  • Participates actively in Company safety program.
  • Ensure that employees have a good understanding of the NWT’s safety program.
  • Ensure that employees are in compliance with company and state safety policies and regulations.
  • Conduct employee training on company safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Must be able to respond effectively to emergencies and help coordinate rescue efforts.
  • Must have a good geographical knowledge of company ownership and surrounding areas.
  • Responsible for overseeing the safe removal of timber in a way that maximizes value while remaining on plan and within budget.
  • Follow all laws and regulations.
  • Interface with Timberland Services and Harvest Planning & Engineering Departments to ensure that Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) objectives are met.
  • Assist  Logging Superintendent as needed with the following:
    • Development of the annual logging plan.
    • Cost-efficient logging of 70-90 harvest units annually.
    • Continuous monitoring of progress of logging plan, taking corrective action as needed to ensure that cost and production goals are met.
    • Work with Logging Superintendent to ensure that timber is felled in such a way that production efficiency and value extraction are maximized without jeopardizing employee safety.
    • Evaluate road locations and cutting boundaries prior to logging to ensure that the crew will be able to harvest the unit in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Manage from four to nine logging operations simultaneously; these operations are often spread out over a large geographical area.
    • Coordinating the transportation of company logging equipment (up to 350 moves annually.)
  • Must be able to assess current weather conditions and make appropriate operational decisions to remain in compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Must be able to devise creative solutions to problems in unusual situations.
  • Work with Road Construction Department on a variety of tasks to facilitate support of logging operations (e.g. road maintenance, equipment moves, additional road construction.)
  • Work with Maintenance Superintendent to coordinate the scheduling of maintenance for logging equipment in order to minimize downtime. 
  • Provide basic diagnoses of mechanical problems.
  • Must possess basic knowledge of equipment operation as position requires occasional loading and unloading of machines from low-boy.
  • Must hold Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO) certification and be able to serve as a pilot on equipment moves.
  • Must develop a good understanding of log sorts and customer specifications.
  • Relay sort changes to operators as directed by Logging Superintendent.
  • Discuss any log quality issues with operators as needed.
  • Regularly monitor Industrial Fire Precaution Levels (IFPL) during fire season to ensure that operations are in compliance with state regulations.
  • Ensure that water trailers and required fire tools are properly positioned during fire season in accordance with state regulations.
  • Visit other companies’ operations to learn about different methods of extracting logs.
  • Assist Logging Superintendent with the direct supervision of Yard & Load union hourly employees.
  • Direct and oversee the activities of employees on a daily basis with oversight from Logging Superintendent.
  • Respond to crew needs in a timely manner.
  • Develop knowledge of Working Agreement.
  • Route union concerns to Logging Superintendent.
  • Assist Logging Superintendent with ensuring that Yard & Load personnel meet all annual training requirements.
  • In a timely and accurate manner, the Logging Supervisor must:
    • Be aware of safety concerns that may have an impact on employees.
    • Have knowledge of company, HCP, SFI, and state forest practices regulations and policies.
    • In some instances, must be able to make logical and timely decisions without the input of others.
    • Display creativity, initiative, and attention to detail, which are critical to contributing to the achievement of operational goals and cost objectives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forest Management or Forest Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Minimum of three years of experience supervising ground and/or cable logging operations.
  • Knowledge of logging and road construction.
  • Knowledge of Washington State Forest Practices Rules.
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently and alone in the field, establish own agenda and require little supervision.
  • Ability to interact positively and productively (through written and verbal communications) across functions within the organization.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, quantify, and resolve problems in a timely and positive manner, viewing obstacles as opportunities to learn and grown.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES DESIRED:

  • Background in various types of logging operations, including cable yarding.
  • Basic understanding of log grades, mill requirements, and domestic and export log markets.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Business administration experience. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Works primarily (90%+) of the time in the field under varying topography and climatic extremes.
  • Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
  • Must have ability to work independently and without immediate supervision in remote areas.
  • Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.
  • This position requires travel throughout western Washington performing field work in varying weather conditions on steep and uneven terrain; operating a vehicle off highway on poorly maintained roads with ongoing harvest and road construction activities. 
  • Must have a good judgment of safety to eliminate risk when working in the field and operating a motor vehicle.  Ability to tour logging operations, attend training and company functions.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
  • Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
