Forestry Technician I (Technologists & Technicians)

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the County Forester, the purpose of the Forestry Technician I is to assist with in-field forest management activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  (not listed in order of priority)

1. Assist with invasive exotic species control through recognition, mapping, and treatment including chemical and manual.

2. Assist with manual thinning operations including brush-saw and chainsaw operation.

3. Assist with infrastructure improvements including gates, fencing and signs.

4. Assist with the collection of forest inventory data for the preparation of prescriptions by the County Forester.

5. Assist the By-law Officer and/or County Forester with the collection of evidence relating to tree cutting by-law infractions.

6. Assist with tree marking on County Forests as required.

7. Assist with tree planting initiatives including site preparation, planting and post plant tending.

8. Comply with provincial and County occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.

9. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

10. Participate in committees and attend meetings as required.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CERTIFICATION

• Completion of a diploma in Forestry, Ecosystem or Resource Management/Technician, or a related discipline.

• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable County regulations.

• Ability to carry out field duties with minimum supervision.

• Valid Ontario Driver’s License (minimum Class ‘G’).

• Experience and certification of chainsaw operation and/or pesticide application would be considered an asset.

• Knowledge of the Simcoe County Forests would be considered an asset.

• Basic computer skills in addition to working knowledge of GIS and familiarity with GPS technology.

• Good organizational skills and an ability to learn and operate in a fast paced, multi-functional environment where priorities will change regularly.

• Ability to act independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

EXPERIENCE

• Six (6) months previous experience in the Forestry field in the area of Resource Technician, Invasive Species Management, Tree Markingor related experience would be considered an asset.

EFFORT

• Physical effort required when operating a brush saw and chain saw, back pack sprayer and when out in the field, required to walk through forestry areas, ground may be uneven.

• Mental effort required when driving a vehicle.

• Ability to lift/carry items up to 50 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Exposure to most weather conditions when out inthe field.

• Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, insects.

• Required to wear personal protective equipment while out in the field in all weather conditions

Compensation

Salary Grade: $23.72 - $28.71
