Northern Pulp Nova Scotia Corporation is a northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp mill located at Abercrombie Point in Pictou county Nova Scotia. The Woodlands team conducts forest management activities on over 250,000 hectares of timberland in Nova Scotia and is currently seeking qualified applicants for the following position:

Forestry GIS Planner

Northern Pulp Nova Scotia is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Forestry GIS Planning position. The successful candidate would be responsible for creation and editing of harvest and road plans using Lidar technology and forest model outputs to meet the several certification standards and provincial requirements. They would also be responsible for maintaining the GIS and the associated data management systems (currently in Access databases).The incumbent will work from the woodlands office at the pulp mill in Abercrombie and may require some time in the field.

Other aspects of this position include creation of various reports for woodlands staff, assistance with long term forest planning, monitoring compliance to certification and provincial standards required for harvesting, silviculture and road building and general support for the woodlands staff and contractors.

Requirements:

  • Must have a degree or diploma from a recognized forestry program
  • Must have a strong forestry background with some knowledge in forest planning, harvesting, road building and silviculture
  • Must have experience with ESRI's Geographic Information Software and their suite of tools including editing and geo-processing
  • Some knowledge of Nova Scotia's provincial forestry and environmental regulations and ability to apply them to forestry planning
  • Experience and currently certified in the Nova Scotia FEC and PTA data collection would be considered an asset
  • Experience with data management systems on multiple platforms including Access databases and the creation of tables, queries, reporting and forms considered an asset
  • Experience using LIDAR and other emerging technologies in forestry applications considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently with strong initiative and organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
