Overview

Humboldt  Redwood Company (HRC) is seeking a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) to join our Forestry team in Scotia, CA.  This is a full-time supervisory position that involves working closely with the Forest Manager for the purpose of meeting forest stewardship and business objectives. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Responsibilities

Primary duties include Timber Harvest Plan (THP) preparation, contract administration, timber marking supervision, road system management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and the long term sustained yield of high value timber products.  The position requires working in a wide range of weather and field conditions.  The key areas of focus for this position are as follows;

  • Develop and prepare the Timber Harvest Plan by performing research, organizing and analyzing field data, preparing the THP maps, analyzing air photos, and contacting outside resources if needed
  • Travel throughout the area defined in the THP and identifies unstable areas
  • Flag boundaries of the area defined in the THP
  • Record water course classifications, lake and protection zones and other data as required to conform to the THP
  • Conduct surveys including botanical, archeological, raptor and spotted owl
  • Prepare field notes to use in writing the THP
  • Develop and administers vegetation and reforestation projects
  • Administer field operations including designing and building roads and logging activity
  • Mark timber and trains others to mark timber
  • Direct work of Seasonal Forestry Technicians and others as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year College or university and three years related experience and/or training or eight years of experience or equivalent education and experience. 
  • This position requires the candidate to possess or be willing to obtain a Registered Professional Foresters license within two years. 
  • Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles and trucks in accordance with company policy guidelines. With appropriate training, an individual must be capable of safely and effectively operating (run, maneuver, navigate and drive in various types of territory) all-terrain vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines
  • The employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep difficult terrain
  • As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate.
  • Position travels within a local nature (within 100 miles) usually by truck
  • May require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, sleeve protection, hard hat, safety shoes, leather/rubber gloves and ATV helmet

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and communicate.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • The employee must have ability to use directional compass and topographical maps. 
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep difficult terrain 
  • As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • This position may require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather/rubber gloves, sleeve protection and a hard hat. Position travels within a local nature (within 100) miles usually by truck
