Stimson is continuing to expand their operations in Montana and is seeking an experienced Forester to assume the management of the operation and guide the team of foresters.  The Area Woodlands Manager will provide leadership and guidance to help attain goals and build relationships within the communities in which Stimson operates. This key role will report out of the Libby, MT office.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES…

  • Manage, coach, develop and supervise a diverse team of Foresters and line managers in the Montana fee timberland base.
  • Ensure the team works in conjunction with Stimson’s Real Estate, GIS/Inventory, Silviculture and Log Procurement staff as well as with external agencies, contractors and communities.
  • Planning and management of sustainable forestry principles through all phases. 
  • Maintenance of all forestry equipment and buildings, wildlife habitat management and accident prevention.
  • Implement and attain annual fee timber harvest targets.
  • Oversee and manage agency timber sale purchases for the region from start to finish. Learn agency timber stumpage purchase protocol and administration.
  • Prepare, negotiate and administer contracts to carry out activities on both company owned land and agency timber contracts in the Montana Unit.
  • Budget and forecast on a regular basis; monitor and track costs against budgets and benchmarks.
  • Active participation in industry advocacy as it relates to the Montana ownership.
  • Implement company policies to ensure activities and personnel are in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. Participate in all audits for compliance.

YOUR QUALIFACTIONS…

  • 4-year degree in resource management is required. Preferably in one of the forestry disciplines.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in forestland management, including supervisory and operations responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of silvicultural practices, forest operation functions and costs, delivered log market negotiations and administration.  Able to quickly learn Montana forestry laws and guidelines.
  • Solid understanding of forestry tools and GIS software and use.
  • Exceptional communication skills both with internal and external contacts. This position has significant interaction with external local forest management stakeholders.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Able to relocate within a 20-minute radius of Libby, MT and become a Montana resident (residency requirement enables the Area Manager to respond quickly to field issues and engage in local and state policy).
